The Ute District Boy Scouts held a Camporee at Camp Alexander in 11 Mile Canyon. David Leinweber, the owner of Angler's Covey, was ask to provide an introduction to fly fishing last Saturday. I met David and Gaylon Wampler at the Boy Scout Pavilion at 8:30 am. The program ended at 2:00 pm. We had six groups of Boy Scouts and their leaders for a total of 70+ that we introduced to fly fishing in 45 minute sessions.
At the first station on the river, I “San Juan Shuffled” and Gaylon collected aquatic insects in a seine. We brought the insects to the scouts on shore for them to examine. David did a “chalk talk” on the life cycle of the mayfly. The second station was knot tying. Using old fly line and a small wood dowel with an eye screw, they learned the clinch knot. Tricos were abundant and I was able to demonstrate successful dry fly fishing to the scouts, using a size 20 adult caddis. Gaylon demonstrated nymphing with an indicator and duel fly rig. It has been said that if a youth has not been introduced to fishing by the time they are 16 years old, the likelihood of fishing being a part of their life is minimal. I would kill to get my youngest brother to go fly fishing, but he is so uninterested it's not even funny. Any ideas on how I can get him to go?

Hi Randy,
Many of the men I have guided, for their first day on the water with a fly rod, have come to a time in their lives where they believe fly fishing can bring something special in their life. Sharing with your brother what time on the river has done for you will plant the seed for a time when fly fishing might be the right thing for him….especially if he is a lover of the outdoors. I hope it is just a matter of time for you two. Tight Lines, Dave |
