Elevenmile Canyon Update

by: Vince Puzick

We headed the long way to 11 Mile Canyon on Thursday morning, June 28, with some nervousness about what condition the Canyon might be in due to the Springer fire.  Would it be ravaged like Deckers?  To our relief, at Messenger Gulch and upstream there was definitely noticeable impact but not extreme fire damage.

The flow was rather low, about 75 cfs.  We fished at Messenger and upstream to the Springer campground.  Fish were taking Amy’s Ants and tan caddis at mid-day in the riffles and behind rocks.  We went further upstream in the evening, near the culverts.  Fish were busy there!   They continued to take tan caddis and Amy’s Ant from early evening until dark.  Stop by the shop and have one of our guys get you set for a great day on the river.

No doubt, the fire has relieved some of the June pressure in the Canyon.  Be careful, though, with the July 4 holiday coming up.  It’s still so dry up there.
