FALL HOURS 9am to 6pm Daily

Report Date: 4/8/2025

Current Conditions:

Spring has sprung!

Stillwater season came early this year and Antero has been fishing pretty good recently. Only hand launched boats are permitted until April 15th. After that the boat ramps will be open at 6am each day. The northern shoreline has been best for us recently. Fish are still cruising pretty tight to the banks eating really anything in their paths. Keep in mind that fish in stillwater move a lot. Staying on the move is a good bet, but pay attention to the distance from the shore you are fishing. Mimic that all along the area you are fishing.

Hatches:

Early season stillwater there are not many bugs active. Midges are active but not on a large scale yet. Its a game of eggs, scuds, leeches, and some chironomids right now.

Tactics:

At ice off, most of the fish will be cruising very tight to the shorelines. You wont need to cast far right now and will likely be fishing pretty shallow. The primary focus should be spotting active fish and fishing in those areas. Its pretty east to sight fish when they are only 10-20 feet from shore.

Tips:

Dodge the wind! Try to focus on the times of the day where there will be less wind. Keep your casts rather close to shore. Think more parallel to the shore.

Weather:

Short Term-  We are having some very nice weather up this way this week. Temps will be in the 60's through the week. Wednesday will be fairly windy so keep that in mind. As we head into the weekend we will see the warmest temps of the year. High temps will be in the upper 60's. Sunday will be nice but we will see some intense winds return. In all, its absolutely beautiful right now!!

Long Term-  Long range forecasts are not in agreement on anything right now. As we go into next week we will have the possibility of a front moving through the area. Right now it does not look to impact this are a whole lot besides lowering the temps about 10 degrees. Some forecast are pointing at some changes around the 20th, but we will have to wait and see. We have had a pretty warm and dry end of winter/beginning on spring. Luckily things arent warming up too fast yet. Lets hope that remains the case as we roll through April and into May.

In the South Platte basin, we have seen some regular storms at higher elevations over the last couple of weeks. This has kept the overall snowpack fairly stable. As of today, the South Platte basin is looking good at 102% of average snowpack. We still have about 2 weeks until we hit the normal median peak, so lets hope we can keep adding to that in the coming weeks.

Antero Reservoir is a shallow reservoir with healthy plant life and more scud shrimp than you can shake a hook at. Because it is so loaded with these protein-rich scuds the trout feed on, their growth rate is significantly higher than fish in most other reservoirs within a reasonable driving distance. So if you have an appetite for catching large and beautifully colored Rainbows and Browns, consider Antero.

This is an area we specialize in and are permitted to guide, so give us a shout if you have any questions or if you are interested in allowing one of our Orvis-Endorsed guides show you how best to conquer Antero Reservoir.
