Current Conditions:

11 Mile has been fishing well over the last few days. Things are slower this time of year but we did see an uptick in the fishing conditions. As is pretty typical of stillwater in general but especially this time of year is the consistency. We are seeing some pretty slow days followed by absolute banger days. Staying persistent is the key because you never know what you are going to get! 11 Mile has an advantage over the other south Park lakes with its depth. We dont see super high water temps here like we can in other shallower lakes. Early mornings and evenings have been best. We typically see a lull in stillwater fishing this time of year. As the days get shorter and we start to cool off, things will eventually turn back on a bit.  Nymphing has been best with the occasional dry fly eat. Depth of your flies will be the single most important things right now. Slip indicators are a good bet right now for fishing depths greater than 10-15 feet.  The weeds are growing at a good clip and its also a good idea to beef up on the terminal tackle. Wrenching these fish out of the weeds can prove difficult, even with 3x tippet.

Hatches:

While we are still seeing some Callibaetis, they are definitely starting to taper off now. Damsels have seemed like the bug of choice over the last week. These are a great fly to imitate on the crawl or even as a dropper off of a big hopper.  We have also seen some caddis here and there. It might be a good idea to add a bead head Hares ear into the mix. Its been a mixed bag on leaches and scuds, but we always suggest having those on hand.

Tactics:

With the warm water temps the fishing has gotten a little tougher. Focus on the mornings or late evening. We do expect a pretty good slow down on the stillwater fisheries. Static nymphing or crawling flies has been effective. Sometimes all the fish need to eat your fly is a little movement.  Depth of your flies is the single most important component of your fishing right now. Gap those flies out to find the zone faster. This is a great time to get out in the lake in some type of watercraft. Dont be afraid to try throwing smaller streamers in the evening. We have recently seen some good success with them.

Tips:

Space out those flies! Doing this on a static rig will help you cover more areas of the water column. Try crawling flies with the "midge strip" technique. It can be absolutely deadly during the callibaetis and damsel hatches. One tip..Hold on to your rod! The takes can be quick, violent and abrupt.

Weather:

Short Term-  We have had quite the opposite weather on how the first half of August was. After a very hot and dry start to the month, its been extremely wet and cool recently. We have seen consistent and almost persistent rainfall over the last few days. This weather change couldnt have come at a better time as fire danger was starting to increase substantially. We will continue to see some cooler and wet weather through the week and into the weekend. Temps will be in the upper 60's/low 70's and rain chances are pretty high each day. Its a good bet that you could encounter rain at any time. Some of the storms could bring quite a bit of lightning with it as well, so remain alert.

Long Term-  Starting on Sunday, we look to dry out a little bit. Temps will remain nice but below seasonal averages. This short break should go through Monday, but then things return to a wetter and again cooler forecast starting on Tuesday. This monsoonal pattern looks to be sticking around through at least the first weekend in September with rain chances in the 50%+ range every day. Temps will stay in the 60's and 70's and will be quite pleasant. Beyond that, its anyones guess. We will take this moisture right now because we are bound to dry out and warm up again.

Elevenmile Reservoir is the heart of South Park fishing. This amazing fishery can challenge anglers mostly because it is so big that it's difficult to locate fish. The reservoir has rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, kokanee salmon, carp, and northern pike. The average fish caught is around 16 inches. However, because of the size and depth of the reservoir and the abundance of nutrients, Elevenmile can grow very large trout and pike. There are great facilities including a shower at the main office for campers. A daily state parks pass for Elevenmile is 7 dollars.

This is an area we specialize in and are permitted to guide, so give us a shout if you have any questions or if you are interested in allowing one of our Orvis-Endorsed guides showing you how to conquer Elevenmile Reservoir.
