Where to Go South Platte River – Above Spinney Reservoir

The South Platte River above Spinney Reservoir is flies and lures only. Parking is found along County Rd. 59 above Spinney Reservoir with only limited access to restrooms and campgrounds. A habitat stamp is required to fish this area. Often overlooked because of its nearby "big brother," the Dream Stream, this stretch of water offer feisty resident fish in the summer that will take a hopper fished tight to the bank under the right conditions. Fishing is best in the spring before runoff and in the fall starting around September and lasting through October.

Accessibility:  Easily accessible from a dirt road, County Road 59.

Season:  Fishable before the spring run off.  Best in late summer and fall with terrestrials.

Fly patterns: Egg patterns, San Juan Worms, RS-2's, Prince Nymphs, Elk Hair Caddis, Amy's Ants, Parachute and Streambank Hoppers

Fish species:  Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, and Brook trout

  2. Turn right onto US-24 W/W Hwy 24
  3. Turn left onto San Juan St
  4. Turn right onto Co Rd 59
  5. Turn left onto Spinney Mountain Access Rd
  6. Continue straight to stay on Spinney Mountain Access Rd
