SUMMER HOURS 6am to 6pm Daily

Report Date: 5/27/2026

Current Conditions:

The flows from Cheesman came up a bit and are currently at 151 cfs. These are on the low side but still decent flows for the canyon right now. As always, the fish are picky in here and the fishing has been technical. Anglers will want to pay attention to everything from their terminal tackle size, to perfect drifts. The fish will be much more picky and attention to detail is key. Nymphing and dry fly fishing are both great options right now. In fact, a hopper or dry/dropper has been a ton of fun at these lower flows. The fishing has been great overall.

Cheesman reservoir is currently 85% full.
Hatches:
Midges and BWO's are the staples. We are seeing good action in both subsurface and adult activity.  Subsurface is always the most consistent, but we have also had some great dry fly fishing for adult midges and BWO's! Caddis are starting to become more important as well. Again, adding scuds, stoneflies, cranefly larva, or worms to the regular hatching insects can be a good idea right now.
Tactics:
Its hopper/dropper time! Low flows are great for this technique and can be a ton of fun.
Tips:
Water temps are still pretty cold in the canyon. But the weather can be hot. Its best to hike in without waders and then put them on once you are in your spot.

Weather:

Short Term-  Cool and wet is the forecast. We will see conditions more akin to March than late May. This little stretch of cooler and wetter weather has sure been nice. After record warmth in March, its nice to see things stay cool and even get some rain. We will see some decent precipitation chances this whole week. Temps will be in the 70's and should see some afternoon rain each day. Things will briefly dry out on Saturday and Sunday and we should have a good amount of sun.  Winds look calm for the most part, but could get intense with the arrival of a thunderstorm. This is the time of year where you want to keep your head on a swivel.

Long Term-  At the conclusion of the weekend, we will return to more of a daily rain pattern. Each day is a carbon copy of the next and you can expect afternoon thunderstorms each day next week. Temps will be nice in the 70's and some of the storms could get intense. In all, it will be well below average temps and above average precipitation chances as we head into June. And to be honest, this is the best case scenario for the dry winter we had. Longer range forecasts are keeping this overall pattern in place, but as always we will have to wait and see. If the jet stream shifts even a little bit, we could be in for some hot and dry conditions.

Cheesman Canyon is one of the most technical and rewarding tailwater fisheries in Colorado. A half-hour hike from Gill trailhead through some hilly terrain gets you to the base of the canyon where the trail splits into a high road and low road. This stretch of the river is catch and release only and is known for holding large rainbows. Almost the entire length of the river that runs through this gorgeous boulder-filled canyon is loaded with deep pocket water and fast runs that provide different challenges depending on where the fish are located. Most of the time the fish are hanging close to undercut boulders and other structure.

Before going to Cheesman, load your box with these patterns: Cheesman Emergers #22-24, Amy's Ants #10-14, hoppers #8-10, Murphy's Bubbleback Midge #20-24, Blindside Midges #20-22, Dorsey's Top Secret and Medallion Midges #22-24, Stonefly nymphs #14-18, Caddis larva #16-20, Tan and orange scuds #14-18, Sparkle Wing RS-2's #18-22, BWO Barr's Emergers #20-22, Copper Johns, Black Beauty #22-24, and Stalcups baetis #20-22.

My favorite stretch of the South Platte. What can I say: technical, challenging, humbling, and rewarding. It is often said that if you can catch fish in Cheesman Canyon, you can catch fish anywhere.

Jon Easdon, Guide and Director of Services
