Where to Go South Platte River – Elevenmile Canyon

Current Reports

Angler's Covey Bug of the Month :

SUMMER HOURS 6 am to 6 pm Daily

Report Date: 7/11/2026

Current Conditions:

"The" Canyon is fishing great right now. It is a fan favorite for our guides currently. Flows have been steady, coming from the bottom of the dam above and pushing right around 100cfs. This is about half of the historic median but still ok. The fish are settled and happy but also being fished to daily.

Guide Reports -

Josh Heney  7/10/2026

Flows are still decent and, as always, fished really good. Great hatch. RS2s and PMDs were the ticket!

Brandon Orr  7/10/2026

Flows have been sitting right around 100 for a consistent period. Fish are settled and feeding happily. Later afternoon to evening trip proved productive. Active water was…everywhere seems, runs, deep holes, etc. Fish are spread out but still holding in packs. Effective patterns were mercury pheasant tails, B’s Caddy, sniper beatis, buckskins, and LED midges.

Hatches:

All types of bugs right now in the canyon. Look for the clouds of Tricos. If the fish are on 'em, you gotta fish 'em. That or a caddis... Caddis are there! As are the PMD's and our old standby Midges and sometimes the BWO's as well.

Tactics:

The great thing about Elevenmile is that you can really choose how you want to fish. Seek out risers and play the technical dry fly game. Look for feeders in the riffles for solid emerger and nymping action, or if you are bold, swing a little streamer around.

Weather:

Short Term- Elevenmile looks to be one of the few places in the state that is offering SOME cloud cover. With a high of 80, it should make for a beautiful day!

Long Term- Sun and high pressure are the trend this coming week. The heat does seem to hold out for a bit, at least with temps in the mid to upper 70's. It will be beautiful to be out, but the high sun may make the fish somewhat more difficult. Don't forget your hat and sunglasses!

Pikes Peak Trout Unlimited has installed water temperature sensors in 11 Mile Canyon. Check out the water temps HERE

Tips:

Look for feeding fish! The fish in Elevenmile Canyon are not spooky persay but are very aware. The deeper, slower water areas tend to be a little trickier when it comes to fooling fish and staying stealthy.

This is an area we offer guided walk/wade trips, and we are one of the only outfitters permitted to do so in 11 mile canyon, please give us a call if you are interested! (We are currently only offering full-day trips here)

Elevenmile Canyon is our local gem. Any seasoned angler will agree that the South Platte River in Elevenmile Canyon is the place to go for unparalleled beauty. Elevenmile Canyon is also the place to go if you just want to catch a fish. Per mile this stretch of river seems to consistently hold more fish than any other river within an hour's drive from Colorado Springs. It is the place to go where you stand the best chance to get into one of the various beautiful species of trout that call the South Platte River home.

If you needing some extra help, Angler's Covey is the only full service fly shop with a permit to guide in Elevenmile Canyon and our Orvis-Endorsed guide would be happy to set up a trip for you.

Elevenmile Canyon is also a great winter fishing destination because it is a tailwater. A tailwater fishery is where a river comes out below a dam; consequently, during the winter months the water temps are just warm enough to stay relatively ice-free all year. If you can find a spot in the upper stretch of the canyon where the winter sun hits the water, you can find feeding fish. This time of year can be the most productive for solitude-seeking anglers who aren't afraid of using light tippets and very small flies.

This is an area we specialize in and are permitted to guide, so give us a shout if you have any questions or if you are interested in allowing one of our Orvis-Endorsed guides show you how best to conquer South Platte River – Elevenmile Canyon.
