SUMMER HOURS 6am to 6pm Daily
Report Date: 6/10/2025
BOATS ARE NOW ALLOWED! NORTH BOAT RAMP OPEN.
There is no estimated date yet for the boat ramps to open. The lake is still very low.
Current Conditions:
Spinney is still pretty low. The lake is 61% full. The lake is filling up a bit with runoff flows from the middle fork and intake from Homestake canal. Still, there is not much water coming into the lake. We dont expect a big runoff this year with our dwindled snowpack either. To be honest, its highly unlikely that Spinney will get above 65% this year. The fishing has gotten better over the last month. Especially for anglers utilizing float tubes and kayaks. Productive depths have been in the 4-8 foot range, but a quite a ways from the shorelines. Shore fishing has slowed down quite a bit, but its still possible in areas with good gradient. Be prepared to move around until you start finding fish. Be sure to check the wind forecast here before you venture out in any type of watercraft.
Hatches:
We are seeing loys of chironomids of all sizes and the callibaetis are also becoming active. Its a buggy situation out here right now and one of the most fun times of the year to hit stillwater. One thing about the callibaetis hatches, the fish will gorge on them and then pretty much stop eating after the hatches. Scuds, leeches, and small streamers are all good patterns to focus on.
Tactics:
Static indicator nymphing and streamers will be your best bet right now. As always, your depth where your flies are will be the most important factor right now. We are seeing fish feed in a bit deeper zones right now. Depths of 4-8 feet have been best.
Tips:
Always move around to find productive water. The fish are not cruising in their usual spots in Spinney. Try and find some type of weeds, structure, or substrate and focus your efforts there. With the lake getting some run off right now the fish are patrolling some of that cool, fresh water.
Weather:
Short Term- It looks like the rain machine may take a little break this week. Rain chances will still be present, just not to the extent we have seen over the last few weeks. This week will be warm with temps in the 70's. Rain chances are around the 20-40% range through the week and will decrease as we head into next weekend. Temps will continue to warm and we will be in the upper 70's/low 80's by Sunday.
Long Term- Looking past the weekend, it looks like we will have more of the same. Temps will remain in the 70's and it will be beautiful. We will still have daily rain chances, but any rain should be short lived. Longer range forecasts are hinting at a drier and warmer stretch of weather as we head through June. Its summer and its definitely going to feel like it.

Spinney Reservoir is one of the best stillwater fisheries in the entire western US. The regulations are flies and lures only and you can harvest one trout over 20 inches. Fish species include: Rainbow Trout, Cutthroat Trout, Brown Trout, Cuttbow trout, yellow perch, and Northern Pike. There are two boat ramps and several parking areas around the reservoir. It is a $9.00 daily pass fee to get in. Anglers bringing a boat make sure to clean it thoroughly because they are now inspecting for Zebra Mussels.
