The Reel Deal New Reels for 2016

Product review by Michael McMillan

It’s not all that often that you find quality gear and a great deal. But it looks like these new reels from Ross and Redington are going to change that stereotype once and for all. Here are a few of the new offerings around $100.00 that we’re pleased to offer for the 2016 season.

Ross Reels is a great little company based right out of Colorado. They have been making quality reels for a number of years now, and that quality has no doubt been carried into their new budget friendly designs.

The Eddy is an excellent starter reel at $70.00 but maintains many of the features of its more costly brothers:  a silky smooth drag system, and a proprietary coating that should increase durability over the long haul.

The Ross Rapid is a steal for the angler that wants a reel capable of stopping bruiser browns while protecting light tippet. An enclosed, infinitely adjustable super-smooth Rulon® disc drag system is responsible for doing the heavy work, while the reverse taper handle yields a solid grip on angry wild trout.

It looks like Redington has a few new cards in their deck as well. From the ultra lightweight minimalist design of the Zero, to the muskie-stopping brute force of the Behemoth, they have you covered for under $110.00.

At just 2.7 oz in the 3wt class, the Zero is setting standards for lightweight reels everywhere. The minimalist design, and an all-new, durable clicker drag system make for the ultimate in lightweight trout reels.

At the other end of the spectrum, the Behemoth offers a unique, unmachinable, die-cast construction.  This durable, interlocking large-arbor spool design looks and functions like a premium reel.  Coupled with a super-heavy duty carbon fiber drag system, this reel will put the brakes on even the burliest game fish.
