November Surprise Fantastic Fall Fishing

by Angler’s Covey Guides

With these recent temps hovering around the 70 degree mark – in mid-November? Whaaaattt? – some of our guides have been talking about this “fall” fishing with springtime temps!  So make yourself some iced tea, put on the sunscreen and bug repellant, and read on!

Greg Blessing:

I’ve seen bigger fish as we transition into winter. Since the water is colder, the hatches during day time only brings big fish back to eating in the daytime and not at night! With less water, the bigger fish are easier to land.  With dropping water temps, fish don’t get stressed as easy! (See more from Greg Blessing on Instagram: @troutblessing.)

Juan Ramirez:

I haven’t fished here recently but just this last weekend I was in Pagosa Springs and fished both the Upper San Juan in town and the Piedra River outside of town.  Normally, the Piedra would be iced-over in places and probably have some snow on the banks and in shady areas. There was zero snow – and no snow on Wolf Creek Pass.  The weather was great, probably about 50 degrees or higher at the river.  Fishing was great, and the fish were still looking up for dries.  (Read more from Juan on his blog:  The Hopper Juan.)

Jon Easdon:

No crowds!! Eager fish have been feeding fairly hard for this time of year. Good hatches are still going on with some sporadic dry fly opportunities. The stillwater fishing has been active, as well. I was on the lake with Justin last week, and we were the only float tubes on Spinney!
