Guide Talk Steve Gossage Returns to the Covey

We’re happy to welcome Steve Gossage back to the shop!  After a couple of years pursuing some other opportunities, Steve has come back to be part of the Angler’s Covey Guide line-up.  “I’ve really missed the people,” Steve says, “the customers and clients, and the great group of guides here at Angler’s.”

gossageAs a Colorado Springs’ native, Steve has fished and guided these waters for over 25 years.

Steve’s looking forward to guiding on the South Platte again.  “There’s nothing like Deckers and Elevenmile Canyon. The fishing has been great this spring, and Elevenmile Canyon is just a beautiful place.”

As we enter into May and our run-off season with high flows, Steve is excited for the opportunity to get people to the river. Everything gets a little bit bigger — big patterns, big tippet — during run-off.

“Tailwaters are definitely fishable during high water — and some aspects of fishing get even better.  With the higher Decker flows, we’ll break out the flush patterns — cranefly, worms — and the 3x tippet. Deckers fishes great when it’s up around 650 or so.”

We were out scouting some runs when Steve and I talked about his return to Angler’s Covey.  After netting some good fish in one run, we moved on to a different section of the river.

“Deckers, to me, seems to be fishing better than before the Hayman fire (2002),” Steve says.  “Maybe not in the numbers of fish — but definitely seems like size and healthiness.”

Prior to his departure from Angler’s Covey, Steve split his time guiding and as store merchandise manager.

“It’ll be great to be focused just on guiding.”

We agree, Steve.  Welcome back!
