The Dog Days of Summer: Meet Our Fishing Pups

When August heat sets in, the rivers slow down, the fish get a little lazier, and—let’s face it—we all start moving at a more leisurely pace. But for our four-legged fishing companions, the “dog days of summer” are just another excuse to wade in, sniff the breeze, and enjoy the day.

Our shop dog and guide pups aren’t just mascots—they’re part of the crew. They’ve sat through more casting lessons than most anglers, have an uncanny knack for spotting rising trout (or at least chasing the ripples), and remind us that fishing is supposed to be fun.

Here are a few of the canine personalities that make our days on the water even better.

Ellie – The Indicator Enthusiast

Shared by Guide Eric Holm
Ellie is a 10-year-old yellow lab who loves nothing more than being on the water with the crew. There’s just one small catch—she’s not exactly the best fishing dog. To Ellie, strike indicators look exactly like her favorite toy: a ball. And if it’s moving downstream, well… why wouldn’t she chase it? She keeps every day on the water interesting, even if the fish don’t always appreciate her enthusiasm.

Amica – The Drift Boat Queen

Shared by Reagan Smith, Covey Staff Member
Amica is a nine-year-old golden retriever who has proudly claimed her rightful spot on the drift boat. She loves long days on the water, watching the scenery float by, and curling up for a snooze on the ride home. As for the fish? She’s still not quite sure what to think of them—but she’s hands-down the best boat dog a girl could ask for.

Murphy – The Fetch Fanatic

Shared by Guide Jon Easdon
“I’ve been blessed to have dogs throughout my entire life. Their unconditional love, companionship, and loyalty are things that make life more rich. I envy dogs really. They have it figured out.”
Murphy, or “Murph,” is living proof. He believes every single human being on the planet is here to love him—and honestly, he might be right. He doesn’t get to join every river trip, but when he does, it’s pure joy… as long as fetch is involved. If you ever meet Murph, be prepared—his love is so abundant, you’ll probably leave wearing some of it.

Tippet – The Chief Morale Officer

Shared by Owner & GM Rachel Leinweber Cosico
“Tippet is truly the most magical dog I’ve ever had. I always knew I wanted a golden—for their sweet personality as a shop dog and their love of the water. However, I never knew what a perfect companion he would be. Whether he’s loving our staff as Chief Morale Officer, stealing socks at home, or looking for rising trout on the river, he’s the best dog I could have ever asked for!”

Why We Love Our Fishing Dogs

Fishing with dogs isn’t always easy—they’re not exactly known for stealth—but it’s always worth it. They remind us to slow down, to laugh at the unexpected, and to appreciate every cast.

So as we drift through these dog days of summer, we tip our hats (and scratch behind the ears) to the pups that make every fishing trip a little brighter. Got a fishing dog of your own? Share a photo with us on social media and tag @anglers_covey—we’d love to meet them!
